Easy ways to spring-clean your diet

The days are getting longer and lighter and the cherry blossoms are blooming, spring has arrived!smoothie-1

This is a great time of year to bring the focus back to what you’re eating and make a few changes to help you feel more energised as we head towards the summer.

The great news is, you don’t have to embark on a scary detox or starve yourself to reap the benefits of a spring clean, just tweaking your usual habits can have a big impact.

Add more green

Green foods that is! Just focusing on adding more green veggies into your usual meals gives you added fibre and antioxidants to support your body’s natural detoxification mechanisms. Try adding a handful of spinach to a smoothie, a side of steamed kale to your curry or why not make a delicious fresh green spring soup with peas, broccoli and mint.

Get hydrated

Over the winter months it can be easy to fall into the habit of drinking cup after cup of tea. Try drinking an extra couple of glasses of plain water, or if you prefer some taste, try adding a slice of lemon or slices of cucumber and a sprig of mint for a refreshing change.lemon water

Switch to natural sweeteners

A great way to spring clean your diet is by switching to natural sugars like maple syrup, honey, coconut sugar or dates instead of refined white sugar or artificial sweeteners. There’s loads of sweet treat recipes on my site that contain no refined sugar, so challenge yourself to try something different the next time you bake!

Eat more fish

Unless you’re a veggie of course, eating more fish is a brilliant way to boost your diet. Salmon and mackerel are my favourites for their healthy skin and heart promoting Omega 3 fats. Try adding tinned mackerel to a salad with beans, red onion and watercress or adding salmon to a stir-fry with soba noodles and ginger.

By focusing on the foods you want to eat more of, rather than the foods you want to eat less of, you’re less likely to feel deprived or feel like you’ve failed if you have something you feel you shouldn’t. Remember, the 80/20 rule is a great way to approach healthy eating, so focus on all the healthy foods you can eat more of, and then enjoy the odd treats that come your way!
