The Ultimate Spiced Hot Chocolate Recipe

The clocks have gone back and the leaves are falling. When you look out of the window at 6pm you’re convinced that it’s midnight, or at the very least, time for pyjamas and cosy sofa time under a blanket. Winter is well and truly here!

I love the crisp, cool days of autumn, but there really is something about this month that makes switch instantly into hibernation mode. When the evenings come, I want to be at home, in my slippers. Perhaps it’s natural instinct to re-group and have some self preservation in advance of the crazy busy Christmas season to come?

I’m always trying to be a bit healthier at this time of year, in advance of festive indulgence. But you know, these cold nights demand some comfort food. This spiced hot chocolate delivers comfort in bucket loads and it’s not choc (see what I did there?) full of additives like some instant drinks. If you’re going to have a moment of joy, it should be a really special one don’t you think?!

The recipe is for one, but is easily multiplied. You could warm the milk in the microwave, but I prefer to do it on the hob as the spices really infuse when warmed slowly. If you have any caramel or chocolate sauce, they would be delicious drizzled on top.


Ultimate Spiced Hot Chocolatespiced-hot-chocolate-portrait small

(Makes 1)


250ml Whole milk

¼ Teaspoon Cinnamon

¼ Teaspoon Mixed spice

50g Dark chocolate, grated

1 Teaspoon Brown sugar (or more to taste)


To serve:

Whipped cream

A sprinkle of cinnamon

A handful of mini marshmallows


  1. Put the milk and the spices together in a small saucepan.
  2. Heat gently until the milk is just starting to bubble at the edges.
  3. Remove from the heat and add in the chocolate and brown sugar and stir until totally dissolved. This might take a bit of stirring, but it’s worth it!
  4. Serve topped with the whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
