7 ways to set health goals so you actually achieve them

Posted on in LIFESTYLE & #LETGO with 0 Comments

Can you feel that buzz as we reach a brand New Year? I always find the blank canvas of a new year inspiring and motivating and I love to set myself goals each year.

Whether you always create resolutions or you’re a bit of a cynic, I believe we all start a fresh year with some thoughts in our mind around the things we’d like to change in our lives.

Goals like losing weight are often top of the list, but can be very difficult to achieve in reality. As someone who set herself a weight loss goal one New Years Eve and then went on to lose 4 stone that year, I have just a little bit of experience in making it happen! Here are my tips…

Find your WHY

What’s the burning reason you want to achieve this goal? What’s motivating you to change? What is your big why? Is so important to get super clear on this at the start as it’s what going to keep you going over the long term.

Write it down and review

Did you know that only 1% of people actually write down their goals? Writing them down means you’re so much more likely to follow through and do them. Add in a way to review them, such as marking them in your diary to check in at the end of the month, and you’ll be even more successful!7 ways to set health goals and achieve them

Be specific

It’s no good setting yourself a goal that’s not specific. How will you know when you’ve achieved it? Make sure your goals are clear and specific. Think of SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time measured) when you write them down.

Create a plan

Every journey needs a map, so create a plan for how you’re going to achieve your goals. Start with the actual goal, what needs to happen in order for it to happen? What things need to change in order for it to be achieved?

Get support

There are some amazing health communities on and offline so go and seek one that matches your values and approach. The support will help to keep you on track and make the whole thing more fun!

Make space

Make space in your life for the arrival of what you want! Look at your current lifestyle, is it possible for your goal to be achieved as things are? Does anything need to change? How can you make the space now for the inevitable arrival of what you’re working towards? Doing this will remove any resistance in place that might work against you achieving your goal.

Accept it’s a journey

Whatever your health goal is, it won’t be achieved in a straight line. You’re likely to have good days and bad days, go off track a little before finding your way again. Accepting that’s the way it will be now at the start can save you a lot of negative self-talk and guilt.

Enjoy your goal setting and have a fabulous 2016!
