Popping up in our face masks, cleansers and even toothpaste. So, what is it that makes charcoal such a wonder ingredient?
You may think that using charcoal is a new trend, when in fact, it’s use dates back to the Ancient Egyptians and it was so coveted, it is said they named it ‘black magic’.
You may have seen it described as ‘activated charcoal’. This simply means that either steam or acid have been added to the carbon rich charcoal enabling it to be able to soak up more moisture which makes it fab for absorbing excess oils and therefore reducing the chance of breakouts.
More notably, activated charcoal is known for its ability to draw out toxins and impurities (hence why it’s great in toothpaste too), so using it on the face allows the skin to have a detox, reducing pores leaving skin feeling cleaner and looking clearer.
So there you have it, give some of Sanctuary’s gorgeous charcoal infused products a try yourself – including our 5 Minute Thermal Charcoal Detox Mask and our Charcoal Detox Shower Burst.
Whilst most of us are familiar with the health benefits of Vitamin C, there are fewer people who know how fantastic it is for the skin, but never fear – Sanctuary are here to tell you why Vitamin C will be your new must have beauty ingredient!
Vitamin C is considered to be one of the most powerful antioxidants in the world – which proves itself in our physical wellness as well as in our beauty products.
Probably most well known for its anti-ageing benefits, it helps to boost collagen production which helps plump out fine lines.
Vitamin C also has a fantastic ability to help repair free radical damage, brighten up the skin and help fade dark spots too, these benefits make it a great solution to help protect the skin from daily pollution as it creates an effective barrier that makes it difficult for dirt and grime to penetrate.
What’s not to love about this wonder ingredient? Try our fabulous Vitamin C infused range including our 20% Vitamin C Daily Glow Serum and our coveted 1 Minute Daily Glow Mask.
Micellar water gets its name from the little micelles found within it. Micelles are surfactants (super absorbers!) that typically work as little ‘magnets’ in the solution that attract dirt, grime and make up from the skin.
It is favoured not only for its cleansing power, but also because of how gentle it is on the skin. It makes a fantastic alternative to washing your face in water from the tap (especially in hard water areas) as it does not disrupt the skins natural barrier function.
The Sanctuary Spa Foaming Micellar Water not only contains these fabulous micelles, it also contains soothing rose water and nourishing argan oil to keep your skin feeling soft and smooth to the touch without compromising on brilliant cleansing power.
So if you are looking to ditch the wipes, our micellar water may just be for you!
Let’s talk Hyaluronic Acid. We know acid can be a scary word – especially when it comes to talking about skincare, but would it make things less scary if we told you that HA is naturally produced by our bodies?
Its primary function in skincare is to retain moisture, around 50% of HA produced by the body is found in the skin, it binds to water to keep it feeling supple and hydrated.
So if our bodies create hyaluronic acid naturally, why would we include it in some of our products? Well unfortunately ageing and environmental aggressors cause our hyaluronic acid levels to drop slightly over time, so by popping it in your skin and body care routine you can keep your skin feeling plump, super soft and hydrated.
Unlike other acids that are designed to exfoliate, hyaluronic acid doesn’t strip the skin so is safe to use every day, it is simply there to hydrate!
Fun fact: A Hyaluronic Acid molecule can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water!

The term ‘beads’ can be controversial in beauty as when they are often spoken about, it’s with messages of plastic beads that do not dissolve and harm our environment, but the Jojoba kind are thankfully completely different! Jojoba is a plant native to North America, which has a wax like texture that can be moulded into little balls. Jojoba beads are of course environmentally friendly and Sanctuary are very proudly micro bead free. We include these fab Jojoba Beads in some of our products to help gently exfoliate the skin, they are ideal for people whose skin a little more sensitive and they pop and disperse on contact with the skin. NB: If anyone asks you how to pronounce this word (which we are also asked a lot), it’s ‘ho-ho-ba’.

AHAs aka Alpha Hydroxy Acid
AHAs aka Alpha Hydroxy Acid
AlphaHydroxyAcid is also known as AHA and this power ingredient is an expert in exfoliation. Made from sugar cane or other plant sources, they are sometimes referred to as fruit acids. They help exfoliate the skin by gently removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin and helps to stimulate new cell generation. As it is a light exfoliant, the acid does not penetrate the skin deeply, it works on the surface to help reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars and dark spots by increasing the collagen producing cells within the skin.
AHAs aren’t scary and they feature frequently within our skincare and bodycare range, so if you feel like you need a lighter touch check out some our favourites like Wet Skin Radiance Jelly and Daily Glow Radiance Tonic.
This underdog is a multi-tasking, multi-benefit wonder that is also known as Vitamin B3. It can treat pigmentation, reduce the appearance of fine lines, treat acne and protect from UV damage – it really does it all! Niacinamide can be used by itself or paired with other active ingredients, so can fit comfortably in any beauty routine. It is an essential Vitamin for keeping your skin strong, healthy, and youthful.
Caffeine is a naturally occurring compound found in plants. It allows your skin to have its own boost throughout the day by stimulating circulation and due to this boost in circulation it gets your skin glowing! This ingredient works really well with Vitamin C and Ginseng as it results in a longer lasting brightening effect to your skin. While it’s busy enhancing your glow, it is also a powerful antioxidant – this allows your skin to tackle free radical damage such as UV light. It enhances the appearance of dry or damaged skin by reducing flaking and restoring suppleness by aiding in collagen and elastin production. In conclusion, it may not make your bed for you or cook the dinner, but it will certainly boost your glow within! We have paired Caffeine and Vitamin C in some amazing body & shower products to energise and smooth skin with that twinkle of glow… Enjoy!
